neighbours.

//a bit of heaven and hell when it comes to neighbours. Bloor, West of Lansdowne. Nikon 8800.

I've been meaning to shoot this scene for a while and finally got around to doing so a couple days ago, then processing it tonight. Did a number of takes as I waited for the patrons to emerge and walk about. For those who can't read the writing, that is a Christian Fellowship on the left and a less-than-gentlemen's club on the right. I am standing in an old used car dealership across the street.

  Did you know that if you'd walked a bit towards Lansdowne and looked on your left, you would have seen the only swastikas that I know of on any Toronto building. The Buddhists were using them to decorate their temples long before the 1930s.

• Interesting, Gary. I've seen that buddist community ctr/temple. I'd bet there might be other old buddhist spots on the East side like that. Might be an interesting day trip.

• It's funny you should post this today. In Anchorage, Alaska there is a bar that might have to move because they are trying to open in a building next to a low key (and barely marked) Russian Orthidox church. You can read more at http://www.ktuu.com/cms/anmviewer.asp?a=4497&z=1

• It's ironic, and a good illustration of free choice enjoyed in our society. The church, Bloor Lansdowne Christian Fellowship, has been there since the 1930's and is currently enjoying a renaissance in membership fueled by new community programs servicing low income families and the homeless. The gabled house roof seen on the left behind the church facade is part of the original building. The newer additions not seen in this photo extend the building south of Bloor for more than 1/2 a block, with a sanctuary seating hundreds and a gymnasium with b'ball for local kids.
