In Genoa, one of the most interesting architectural features are the amazing frescoes painted on the sides of building which give them architectural details otherwise missing. Quite the sight to see. What I also found interesting is that the municipalities also have laws in place that requires building owners to maintain their frescoes so that the areas never lose their splendor.
